SPRINGFIELD – Following the Senate’s approval of the Fiscal Year 2027 state budget, State Senator Laura Ellman (D-Naperville) released the following statement:
“Families, local governments and community organizations are being asked to navigate increasing uncertainty as federal leaders continue to create instability and completely gut funding and essential services. This budget reflects Illinois’ commitment to investing in our communities in a balanced budget.
“One of the most important responsibilities of state government is being a reliable partner to our local communities. By preserving funding through the Local Government Distributive Fund, this budget helps municipalities maintain critical services, invest in infrastructure and support the programs residents depend on every day without shifting additional burdens onto local taxpayers.
“Illinois is consistently meeting its commitments and keeping our promises by fully funding evidence based school funding and our pension obligations. I am proud to see funding nearly triple for the free breakfast and lunch program, helping school districts meet the needs of hungry students.
“I am especially proud that this budget includes support for the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. IMSA is a world-class institution that prepares the next generation of innovators, researchers and problem-solvers. Investing in IMSA is an investment in Illinois’ future workforce, economic competitiveness and leadership in science and technology.
“At a time when many states are pulling back, Illinois is continuing to invest in people, strengthen communities and create opportunities for future generations. This budget reflects our values and our belief that every community deserves the resources necessary to thrive.”
